| RemembranceStonestm: .A concerted effort is made to let go of the deceased by gradually scaling down on the mourning, again with time milestones : The first week of Shiva, the first month, the unveiling, the first year memorial service as a closure, and then the annual Yahrtzeit. Family members routinely try to visit the gravesite on the day of the eve of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Shavuot, and Pesach. Yet at the same time, an equal effort is made to keep the deceased very much alive in the heart of the family and friends. Children are named after the deceased to keep their memory alive. Visitation of the graveside is another way to keep that person alive in our heart, and each visit is marked by placing a small stone on the top right hand corner of the gravestone. And yet, so many of us live far away from our family members' graves. The stones can still be used as a way to remember at a memorial wall or in your home.
Exodus 28 tells us about stones to remember: It is a tradition to place a stone on the top right hand corner of the gravestone. If it is too difficult to visit a graveside, you can keep a special stone in your home as a remembrance, or place next to the Yahrtzeit candle. This is just one of many references to stones for memorials. Traditions Renewed has made smooth riverstones with prayers printed on one side to use for memorial stones. TraditionsRenewed offers these stones with a prayer inscribed on them, accompanied by a pen with permanent ink to personalize the stone. It is just another way to establish a connection with an ancestor. A bag with two stones, permanent marker, and a brief history of this tradition is available OR you can get the stones separately.
